Morte Point, owned by the National Trust, is formed from the characteristic greenish-grey Morte slate, which with a few interbedded sandstones is resistant enough to form this prominent headland.
The Morte Stone is a large rocky outcrop separated from Morte Point by a deep channel. The channel becomes a dangerous race on the incoming tide and has played witness to numerous tragic shipwrecks.
Morte Point is the location of the Devon County Geological Site at Windy cove because of the good examples of bedding cleavage relationships, where bedding is not clearly picked out by contrasts between different rock types.
