On Friday 17th September, walkers and visitors to the South West Coast path above the picturesque fishing village of Clovelly, will be able to find out more about a very special prehistoric burial mound, the Gallantry Bower Barrow. This Scheduled Monument of national archaeological importance is being given some TLC (scrub management) by North Devon Coast AONB volunteers as part of a Devon wide Monument Management Scheme, which is funded by Historic England. Gallantry Bower is a large, circular bowl barrow earthwork which is thought to have been created in the Bronze Age period, around 4000 years ago, as a burial mound. There are around 10 000 bowl barrow monuments in the UK, but only a small percentage are as well preserved as Gallantry Bower and this is why it has been designated a Scheduled Monument and is now protected by law.
On Friday 17th September volunteers from the local North Devon community, will be helping AONB staff to enhance the management of the monument, by reducing scrub and depending on availability, taking part in a Geophysical Survey of the remains and surrounding area. The monument is accessible from the South West Coast path and information about the work will be provided by our friendly AONB volunteers to any visitors or walkers interested in the prehistory and history of this landmark monument on top of the cliffs above Clovelly.
